YMCA Splash teaches hundreds of Salem kids water safety.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years. The Y is doing its part to keep kids safe around the water with "YMCA Splash," an annual water safety program provided to Salem City Schools. For three weeks each May, every second grader in Salem's four elementary schools travels to the Y to learn drowning prevention techniques in a fun and nurturing environment. About 300 kids pass through the program each spring before they head to the pool, lake, water park or beach. Each of these environments is unique, so each gets special attention. LewisGale Medical Center and the Y help to make Salem healthier.
